About This Print: 
This portrait was taken on a hike in the mountains of Sapa, Vietnam. The women in this area earn an income by selling various hand made crafts, mainly to tourists. There are ever-changing laws and regulations about where these women are allowed to sell their crafts as tourists felt the pressure of constant pestering in the town centre. The women hike into the town centre every day and the trail to their village is shared with a lot of popular hiking routes. A group of women were walking back to their village, sharing the trail with our group, this was a unique oportunity to create a connection in a situation that didn't feel transactional or pressured. We were able to hear stories of how these women live their life, the husstle of selling their crafts, the patience and community effort of creating the various peices they sell. 

When we reached her village and were parting ways I wanted to support her but as I was travelling light I didn't have the space to be buying additional items. I wanted to offer her money instead but was feeling torn because I didn't want to be disrespectful, she earns a honest wage from selling her craft I didn't want her to feel like she was begging. I gave her the money in a way that felt like a gift, and in return she took a bracelet from her arm and slid it onto mine. The bracelet she gave me was created from old Vietnamese coins, and this gesture stayed with me. Unfortunately the metal gave me a rash and I wasn't able to wear the bracelet but I kept it and when I see it in my jewlery box I am reminded of this woman.

This photo is meant to be more than decor; it’s a doorway, reminding you that you’re capable of far more than you imagine. My art is a soft spark, inviting curiosity, conversations, and the courage to reach for the life calling your name.
